Dial-up Networking and Windows 2000
The following document discusses how to set up a Dial-up Networking connection on Windows 2000 Professional.
This article assumes that you have properly installed a modem on the Windows 2000 Professional-based computer. If you have not yet installed your modem, first follow the instructions provided by your modem manufacturer, then return to these instructions. If you are having problems with your modem on Windows 2000, contact your modem manufacturer.
If you are a Staff or Faculty member, please contact your LAN Administrator for instructions on how to connect to SIUC.
Dial-up Networking Configuration
Click on 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Network and Dial-up Connections'
Double-click on 'Make New Connection'
Click on 'Next'
Select 'Dial-up to the Internet'
Click on 'Next'
Select 'I want to set up my Internet connection manually ...'Click on 'Next'
Select 'I connect through a phone line and a modem'Click on 'Next'
Area code = 618
Telephone number = 453-2888 (Public 56k)
Telephone number = 536-2900 (Housing 56k)*In order to use the Housing 56k, you must have purchased this service from Telephone Services.
Country/region name and code = United States of America (1)Select 'Use area code and dialing rules'
Click on 'Advanced'
Click on the 'Connection' tab.
Under 'Connection type', ensure that 'PPP' is selected.
Under 'Logon procedure', ensure that 'None' is selected.
Click on the 'Addresses' tab.
Under 'IP Address', ensure that 'Internet service provider automatically provides one' is selected.
Under 'DNS server address', ensure that 'My ISP automatically provides a DNS address' is selected.
Click 'OK'
You should have returned to the 'Internet Connection Wizard, Step 1 of 3' dialog.
Click on 'Next'
You should now be at the 'Internet Connection Wizard, Step 2 of 3' dialog.
Public 56k:
Enter your Network ID and Password in the appropriate locations.
Housing 56k:
Enter the ID and Password your received from Telephone Services into the appropriate locations. If you don't know what these are, contact Telephone Services.
Click on 'Next'
You should now be at the 'Internet Connection Wizard, Step 3 of 3' dialog.In the 'Connection name' field, enter a name that you will use to refer to your Dial-up Networking connection.
If you are using the Public 56k dial-in, 'Public 56k' is suggested.
If you are using the Housing 56k dial-in, 'Housing 56k' is suggested.
Click on 'Next'
Select 'No' at the 'Do you want to set up an Internet mail account now?' prompt.
Click on 'Next'
Clear the box next to 'To connect to the Internet immediately, ...'Click 'Finish'
At this point you should be able to dial in to the SIUC 56k modem banks. If you are unsure of how to do this, consult the online Windows 2000 Professional help system (Start -> Help). Search for 'modems'.
