Clean Access and RezNet - Purpose and Introduction

Purpose:
This document is intended as an introduction and step-by-step method for installing the Cisco Clean Access (CA) Agent program on computers using Microsoft® Windows®. The CA Agent will then allow SIUC students living in the residence halls to access to the campus network, or "RezNet." The detailed installation instructions given here apply ONLY to users of Microsoft Windows, and specifically to Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

If you are using any other operating system, such as Macintosh OS 9 or OS X, Linux, or BSD, you will use a different, web-browser-based log-in system instead.

Introduction:
When the RezNet was first introduced in the residence halls, there were no controls or regulating programs. It was assumed that students would share network resources fairly, and that no one would actively abuse the networking systems. This assumption was incorrect, and resulted in chaos. Most of the available network resources were consumed by a few computer-savvy individuals, and the majority of residents received very poor network service.

To make the network more available to all students, the original Cisco, Inc. Broad-Band Service Manager, or "BBSM," log-in control system was installed. BBSM provided some control of the network and ended the unfair consumption of resources by the few, but there were still many problems for some users and with the BBSM program itself. There was a lot of room for improvement.

Starting in the Summer Semester of 2005, students living in the residence halls will be using a program called "Clean Access," or "CA." If you are using a Windows operating system (such as Windows XP or Windows 2000), you will be required to install the CA Agent program if you wish to make use of the campus RezNet.

These instructions assume that your Windows-based computer is in good working order, has a properly installed network adapter, and that you have an Ethernet cable (not a telephone cord). We are also going to assume that your computer IS NOT ALREADY INFECTED with malware or viruses, and has not been compromised or "cracked" by others via the internet.

If you are already infected or compromised, you may need to take measures such as scanning and deleting viruses or spyware, or in extreme cases wiping your hard disk clean and then reinstalling all the operating system files and user programs to rid yourself of the infestation. Software tools and assistance with these procedures are available from the Computer Support Center, 453-5155 or by email at infotech.siuc.edu.

Once your computer meets these functional requirements, you will then need to revisit this page to gain access to the RezNet.
